Annual meadows

Create Your Own Insta-Worthy Flower Meadow!

Imagine stepping outside to a burst of color, with bright blooms swaying in the breeze—sounds dreamy, right? You can bring those meadow vibes straight to your backyard with an annual flower meadow. It's easier than you think, and we’ve got all the tips to help you make it happen!

Step 1: Prep the Ground
Unlike wild meadows that thrive in poor soil, annual flower meadows love rich, healthy dirt. So, roll up your sleeves and get your patch of earth ready:

  • Clear out any weeds (they’re not invited to this flower party).
  • Mix in some organic matter to give your flowers a nutrient boost.
  • Rake the soil until it's fine and crumbly—think of it like prepping a bed for your flower babies.

Step 2: Pick Your Bloom Crew
Time to choose your flower squad! Whether you want a classic wildflower look or something bold and colorful, there’s a mix for you:

  • Classic Cornfield Vibe: Poppies, corn marigolds, and corncockle for that timeless meadow aesthetic.
  • Short & Sweet: Go for a low-growing mix (around 40cm tall) for a more subtle display.
  • Bright & Bold: Create a fiery meadow with red flax, black-eyed Susan, and Californian poppies.

Step 3: Sow & Grow
Now for the fun part—planting your meadow!

  • Mix your flower seeds with a bit of silver sand (this helps you spread them evenly, so no bald patches!).
  • Scatter about 3g of seeds per square metre (roughly a small handful).
  • Gently rake them into the soil and give them a good drink of water.

Then, sit back, relax, and watch the magic happen. By summer, you’ll have a stunning flower meadow that’s perfect for snapping pics or just enjoying nature.

Pro Tip: Once your meadow has bloomed and the season winds down, clear the ground in autumn. Some flowers will re-seed themselves, but to keep your meadow popping every year, re-sow in spring.
