Herbs for beauty
Why rely on store-bought products when you can create your own beauty rituals straight from the garden? Many of today’s skincare favourites—think toners, balms and bath soaks—have their roots in herbal traditions. And the best part? You can grow many of those same herbs at home.
At Elmwood Nursery & Garden Centre in Emersons Green, we’ve got everything you need to start your own beauty garden. Whether you’ve got a windowsill or a dedicated herb patch, these plants are as easy to grow as they are powerful.
Here are a few of our favourite ways to garden yourself gorgeous:
1. Lavender Sleep Soak
For ultimate relaxation, try this botanical bath blend:
- 1 part lavender flowers
- 2 parts bay leaves
- 4 parts fine oatmeal
- 4 parts bran
Simmer with water for about an hour, then strain and pour a cupful into your bath. The scent is dreamy—and so is your night’s sleep.
2. Homemade Marigold Moisturiser
Pot marigolds (Calendula) are not only bright and beautiful—they’re also kind to sensitive skin.
- Melt 150g emulsifying cream in a bowl over simmering water
- Add 70g glycerol and 80ml water, then stir
- Mix in 30g dried marigold petals and simmer gently for 3 hours
- Strain and store in the fridge
Apply it as a daily moisturiser or calming night cream.
3. Herbal Foot Revival
Soothe tired feet with this easy, fragrant remedy:
- Grab a handful of fresh sage, thyme, marjoram and bay
- Place in a bowl with boiling water and a tablespoon of salt
- Let cool slightly, then soak your feet and unwind
It’s simple, natural, and leaves your skin soft and refreshed.
