Children's Gardening Week 2023 is just around the corner, and we couldn't be more excited here at Elmwood Nursery and Garden Centre! From May 27 to June 4, 2023, children all over the UK will be encouraged to get their hands dirty and learn about the joys and benefits of gardening.
What is National Children’s Gardening Week?
National Children's Gardening Week is an annual event that aims to inspire children to connect with nature, learn about gardening, and develop an appreciation for the environment. As a garden centre that is passionate about gardening and nature, we fully support this initiative and encourage our customers to get involved.

Our goal is to make gardening fun and accessible for children of all ages, and we believe that National Children's Gardening Week is a fantastic opportunity to do just that. We hope that by getting involved, more children will develop a love for gardening and an appreciation for the environment.
Why you and your kids should get your green thumb on - together!
Gardening is an excellent activity for children for several reasons. First and foremost, it allows children to connect with nature and learn about the environment in a hands-on way. Through gardening, children can observe and interact with plants, insects, and other living creatures, which can help them develop an appreciation for the natural world.
Gardening also teaches children valuable skills, such as responsibility, patience, and teamwork. When children are responsible for caring for plants, they learn to take ownership of their tasks and develop a sense of accomplishment as they watch their plants grow and thrive. Gardening also requires patience, as children must wait for their plants to grow and mature over time.
Overall, gardening is a fantastic activity for children that promotes a love of nature, teaches valuable skills, and encourages family bonding. Whether you have a large garden or just a small windowsill, gardening with your children can be a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family.
What your kids could do in the garden
There are many things that kids can do in gardening, depending on their age and level of interest. Here are some ideas:
- Planting: Children can help with planting seeds or young plants in the ground, in containers or raised beds. This can be a great opportunity to teach them about soil preparation, spacing, and planting depth.
- Watering: Kids can help with watering the plants, which can help them develop a sense of responsibility and ownership.
- Weeding: Children can help with pulling out weeds, which can be a satisfying activity as they can see the results of their work right away.
- Harvesting: Children can help with harvesting fruits and vegetables when they are ready. This can be a great opportunity to teach them about healthy eating and where food comes from.
- Creating garden art: Children can create their own garden art using natural materials such as rocks, shells, and sticks.
Gardening is a fun and educational activity for children, and there are many ways to involve them in the process. With the right guidance and encouragement, children can develop a love of gardening and nature that will last a lifetime.
